rice has been caught up in this drama over the benghazi conflict and the deaths of americans in the assault on the u.s. consulate there. while susan rice was not responsible for security of the consulate, she did go on sunday shows and talk about the u.s. response there and she has been accused of deliberately mischaracterizing what happened. all sides -- or the white house has adamantly insisted and she has insisted that she in no way deliberately mischaracterized what happened. she was reading from unclassified talking points and nonetheless this has been caught up in a back and forth and, wolf, if i may, i'm going to read from part of her statement, her letter to the president and what she wrote in part, i am now convinced that the confirmation process will be lengthy, disruptive, and costly to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities. that tradeoff is simply not worth it to our country. the secretary of state may never be politicized. she says, i look forward to building on progress in your second term which seems to leave the door open to the po

over her response to the attack on the consulate in benghazi. ed henry has more on both breaking stories. take it away. >> reporter: you are right. speaker boehner left the capital and expected to arrive at the white house in a moment. this could not put more explanation point how critical this meeting is. we are running up against the fiscal cliff. we heard from firms that unless a framework for a deal is forged in the next few days they are going to run out of time in order to actually move whatever deal they come up with through both changes to the house and the senate. this is why i got new information that last night senate majority leader harry reid met in a private dinner and he was saying he believes it's nearly impossible to get the fiscal cliff deal done before christmas. what they are focused on is a so-called plan "b" where the house in the next few days may pass extension of the middle class tax cuts. the old bush tax cuts. then let the tax rates for the rich go up and fight it out in january and february over spending cuts. we'll see whether or not conservative goes

was so obsessed with benghazi, because he had nothing else. and even benghazi, of course, was overblown. >> let's take a look at this. this is an ad by the superpac supporting president obama. it was singled out by politifact for being false. it was a devastating but powerful ad that left the impression that mitt romney and bain capital had responsibility for a woman's death. let's listen. >> when mitt romney and bain closed the plant, i lost my health care, and my family lost their health care. and a short time after that, my wife became ill. i don't know how long she was sick. and i think maybe she didn't say anything because she knew that we couldn't afford the insurance. and then one day she became ill, and i took her up to the jackson county hospital, and admitted her for pneumonia, and that's when they found the cancer. and by then it was stage 4. there was nothing they could do for her. and she passed away in 22 days. i do not think that mitt romney realizes what he has done to anyone. and i hurt more, i do not think that mitt romney is concerned. >> over the top? john? >> i mean

this fight and just benghazi. >> the biggest number at all is most people don't know enough about her to make up their opinion. as we know, the way politics worse is that absence two sides of a debate, one side will win. if there is one piece of information, it's all been pretty negative about her so far. i do think there is a risk for republicans regardless of whether they will say that if they proceed with a pretty ugly i think there are problems with terms of tone and how aggress he have the republicans want to be seen as going after her especially because so many attacks are over this benghazi issue and over talking points, and -- >> she had nothing -- >> look. her critics make other arguments, and you can debate the substance of that, but many terms of just sort of this is a very narrow cast discussion right now over a tv appearance. >> over one tv appearance. diversity is always an issue in the obama cabinet. just like any other administration. >> that's right. >> interestingly enough, it's been 15 years since there has been a white man as secretary of state. 15 years since we've had th

. >> bill: because of benghazi. >> because of the way the republicans have highlighted this as an issue. john kerry who has been you know the bridesmaid for this position for years and years and years, he is dying for the position. we know that he wants it. he's all lined up and ready to go. it is also very clear senate republicans have made it clear he will sail through a confirmation and that's important. so now it is kind of looking -- by process of elimination that he potentially is back in the front of the line. he remains a top contender. no question. >> bill: would he take defense if he doesn't get state? >> i make no claims to reading the mind of john kerry. he sphnt made himself available to the press to talk about it. >> bill: it would not be a step down to be secretary of defense. >> of course not. he has a lot of experience on foreign policy issues. it would be an appropriate fit. >> bill: no matter what they said in 2004, he is a genuine america war hero. i want to throw that in here.

this political capital on what is going to be an interminutable benghazi investigation. john mccain signaling he wants to go on the foreign relations committee, he was going to lead the way. >> let's get this from chuck as well. do you think that clinton, secretary clinton or former president clinton, they have done this i know in private, said what they thought about this, they were for kerry. did they ever express that for lobby for kerry or against rice in this case do you know? >> it's my understanding they didn't. i think that hillary clinton understood where the president's loyalties lie, that he was leaning towards susan rice and she wasn't going to start a debate and try to -- and i think, in fact, those close to secretary clinton really tried to snuff out those stories that secretary clinton wanted kerry over rice, didn't want to have rice replace her. i think she stayed out of that a lot. so i don't think that they were going to step into that at all. i mean, i know there's always been speculation that susan rice and secretary clinton weren't close, and it all -- some of that all goes

and the aftermath of the attacks on benghazi and libya that killed the ambassador there and several others. so she's come under fire because of the administration's response. we've seen many veteran senators very critical of her, including senators john mccain and lindsey graham. they will have much more on "the situation room" as this news is just coming out, what this means. let me get to the statement here, the statement from the white house. quote, i spoke to ambassador rice and accepted her decision to remove her name -- this is the president -- remove her name from consideration for secretary of state. it goes on. for two decades susan has proven to be an extraordinarily capable, patriotic, and passionate public servant. as my ambassador to the united nations, she plays a role in american's interest. she has secured international support in sanctions against korea and stood up for sudan and stood for the human rights of all people. it goes on to say that he's very grateful that she will continue to serve as ambassador to the united nations. it's been widely known that she has been the topic.

in benghazi next week. secretary of state, hillary clinton, testified before the house florida affairs committee. we'll have that live on the c-span networks and c-span.org. here's a look at the prime time programming across the c-span networks. >> i've been on that bus. they are just as good as gold. >> all of us, i think, in the country were starting to people coming out and talking about their experience, this phenomena, that so many of us experienced in one way or another and had no words for other than adolescence, other than growing up. we're finally, people were starting to stand back and say, hold on, this is not a normal part of growing up. this is not a right of passage. there was a moment where there's a possibility for change, and director lee and i decided to start the film out of that feeling that voices were bubbling up, coming up to the surface to say that this is not something we can accept anymore as a normal part of the culture. >> the filmmaker lowen gathered essays and perm stories together in "bully," and hear more saturday night at 10 on "afterwords" and more boo
